  • Global Campaign for Education is set up
  • Figures show 100 million children are not able to go to school

2000

Education is my right!
  • World leaders promise to deliver free, primary education for all children by 2015

2003

Education is my right!
  • A world record broken - two million people took part in ‘Girls Education: The Biggest Lesson’ as part of the campaign

2004

The world’s biggest ever lobby
  • Two and a half million campaigners, young and old, target heads of state, dignitaries and officials in the ‘World’s Biggest Ever Lobby’

2005

My friend needs a Teacher
  • Send My Friend to School launches and 7,000 schools take part
  • Five million ‘buddies’ – each representing one of the 100 million children out of school – are sent to world leaders
  • Make Poverty History runs throughout the year
  • At the G8 in June, world leaders promise to cancel debts owed by 18 of the poorest countries and give more money for education

2006

My friend needs a Teacher
  • Send My Friend to School launches My Friend Needs a Teacher
  • 8,000 UK schools take part and make cut-out teachers
  • Over six million campaigners in 112 countries highlight the global teacher shortage
  • UK government promises to give £8.5 billion for education worldwide by 2015

2007

JOIN UP event in Brussels
  • Send My Friend to School launches JOIN UP!
  • Children from 11 countries went to the European Parliament, to make the first JOIN UP chain in 2007. They asked political representatives to increase aid to education so that all children could go to school.
  • Over one million children JOINED UP to form the world’s longest chain
  • Children and communities in 120 countries around the world joined up with human or paper chains to show world leaders their commitment to education for all

2008

JOIN UP event in Brussels
  • 250,000 children in the UK sent decorated Missing Out cards to Gordon Brown asking him to prioritise education at the G8
  • Hundreds of cards were sent off to MPs from schools across the country. Schools also invited MPs in to tell them about the global education crisis and to ask for their help
  • An amazing 8.8 million people worldwide did the World's Biggest Lesson including thousands of students in the UK
  • World leaders met in July in Hokkaido Tokyo in Japan. The G8 announced $1 billion in funding to help meet the global shortfall for education. Sadly, this is less than 10% of what they need to give

2009

  • 6,500 schools were part of the Big Read: one million young people took part in the UK and asked the Prime Minister to do all he can to give every child a chance to go to school
  • 13 million joined in around the world: events took place in Armenia, Lebanon, Greece, Mexico, Sri Lanka, Ethiopia and many other countries!

2010

Education is my right!
  • With five years to go until 2015 there are still 72 million children out of school
  • This is the year of 1GOAL!
  • 3 billion people watch the World Cup around the world
  • The World Cup finals take place in Africa for the first time - let's take this chance to leave a legacy of education for all
  • Join famous footballers, such as Michael Owen, David James and Michael Essien in declaring your support for 1GOAL: Education for All
  • Order a free pack for your school or sign up online as an individual.

2015

JOIN UP event in Brussels
  • All children go to school … But only if we get things right now
